Day 1: Marrakech » Atlas Mountains » Zagora (Camel Trek & Camping) [355 km]

After breakfast, we'll begin our two-day desert safari starting from Marrakech to Zagora in the south. beginning in the town of Ait Ourir, the road gets narrower and then begins to climb, until it reaches the 2,260-meter Tizi N-Tichka mountain located at the bottom of the canyon. The canyon is flooded and drained by water from the Tamesna River. There are several tiny hamlets that are still alive thanks to rivers, such as tiny villages.

Continue on our Marrakech through Zagora desert excursion, we will discover another gem of the region, which has been designated UNESCO World Heritage, Ait Benhaddou. A fortified village, with crenelated towers that is among the most stunning Kasbahs located in the Glaus region. The Kasbah then makes its way to Ouarzazate and then an anti-atlas. It passes by the Draa Valley and its river, where a number of tiny villages are situated along the valley's edge on the route.

What do we need to bring with us?

A small backpack with things you might need for the camel ride and an overnight stay in the desert camp. A scarf, a hat, sunglasses, good walking shoes and wet napkins can be useful. If staying at the Comfortable desert camp, you will need to bring your own shower accessories and a towel. To have a comfortable camel trek, we advise to wear jeans, trousers or long shorts.

How long is the camel ride?

The sunset camel ride is about 1 hour and sunrise trek is 40 minutes.

Can we skip the camel ride?

It is possible to skip the camel ride. But to get to the desert camp you will need either to walk with the guide (about 1 hour at sunset and 40 minutes at sunrise) or take 4×4 which.

Wonderful 2 days desert tour from Marrakech to Zagora Everything was as shown; we spent on an upgrade for a private camp with toilets and showers and that was certainly deserving it. The driver was very helpful and the 2 days tour went smoothly and easily. The desert camp and our Berber guide were excellent and it was an enjoyable experience, all in all, camel riding fun, and the food in the camp really good. Sunset and sunrise in the camp were breathtaking. I would not do this trip with small children because there is a lot of driving (each day around 360 km), but it was fine for us. Important tip: if you get car sick, surely take some medication with you, because there is driving over mountains and twisting roads. We didn't have those problems and completely enjoyed our experience.

Excellent Zagora desert trip The pick up from the riad was on time, the trip was good and the driver spoke very good English and was helpful and friendly. Moreover, we had enough stops on the way, therefore we took beautiful shots. The requirements in the desert camp were much better than expected and the people there were friendly and served us good food. The second day we made it back to Marrakech on time. On the way, the Lunches were good at a calm restaurant. Overall it was an excellent adventure and we are already considering a Merzouga - Fes trip for our next Morocco trip.

Your life is in the hands of someone you don't know, and all that time in the car could be tedious. I'm happy we took the opportunity because our driver was excellent. The driver was extremely clean, he drove amazingly well, also he speaks four languages fluently and took us to unique spots . Also, the landscape was continually changing, so we were amazed at each turn. Completely worth it. Looking forward to do a longer trip.
